The National Health Services (NHS) has given an award to Nintendo’s Wii Fit Plus system called Change4Life. They are now have the first ever computer game to be consider a health and fitness product. That’s a good thing for gaming and for the sales of the Wii Fit system.
The system comprises the Nintendo Wii, Wii Fit plus game and the Nintendo Balance Board. The package will mean you can monitor your weight and improve on your fitness by exercising. You can even set the game into a competition by competeing with follow users to see who loses the most weight or gets fittest quickest. The great thing is you can do all of this in your living room.
As a result of the media coverage and the NHS award Nintendo have produced a hit and 2009 saw Christmas sales do very well with this game. A cheaper way to get fit compared to the gym, you can choose from upto five training modes and then various levels within each mode. Using the players BMI (Body Mass Index) the Balance Board can work out how many calories you have burnt off by doing the exercise set by the Wii Fit game. Players will have their own fitness plan mapped out for them.
As a part time fitness trainer myself, I can see the potential benefits this could have for people. The main aspect of it is the fact that getting fit and healthy has just become fun again and as it is an indoor activity the weather won’t interrupt play.
