Google celebrates 30yrs of PACMAN

pacman

Its a classic game and today PACMAN is celebrating 30 years of life.  If you go to www.google.com you will find a playable version of the game on the front page in a flash format.  PACMAN is still as popular now as it was when it was first released.  Creator Toro Iwatan created a gaming legend.

A word of warning for you Firefox users out there.  Many people are noticing that the PACMAN sound is not going away from there browser when they are surfing, even when they only have a blank tab open.  To cure this problem keep reading.

Why does the PACMAN tune start playing when I open firefox?

The reason lies within the plugins of Firefox.  When I first started up Firefox today  this tune would not leave me alone and I naturally thought VIRUS.  Don’t panic, it’s nothing to worry about.  The common reason for this seems to be when a certain plugin called “coolpreviews” is enabled.  To solve the problem select  Tools>Add-ons from the browser tool bar.  Find the “coolpreview” plugin and select disable.  Firefox will then ask you to restart your browser and upon reopening the problem will be solved….hopefully.

If you have experienced this and have solved it some other way then please comment on this post so I can include the information for others.  In the mean time enjoy playing PACMAN.

$1.6 Million was the settlement

Australian man James Burt has been stung for a whooping $1.6 Million dollars by Nintendo for being the first person to illegally distrobute the newest Mario game.  Super Mario Wii pre-release version was available on the webfor download illegally from November 6th 2009.  James Burt was found by a forensic investigator employed by Nintendo to be responsible for copying and uploading the game.  As a result he was taken to court and fined $1.5million dollars and ordered to pay $100’000 in fees.  The illegal copy was downloaded thousands of times before it got shut down and this marks a big victory in the land of piracy.

I’m not sure if James Burt has the money tucked away somewhere to pay the fine back but the average person would probably declare themselves bankrupt and Nintendo wouldn’t see a dollar.  So is this really a victory, and possibly james could make some cash of his new found fame?  Piracy is definitly wrong but maybe a more realistic fine or perhaps a punishment would of been better suited?

Jailbreaking your Iphone for a Nintendo Emulator

Lets look at how you can play some calssic Nintendo Games on your Iphone or Itouch.

The process you have to perform in order to accomplish this is called jailbreaking.  This term has been given to this process and effectively means you are allowing your Iphone or Itouch to run unathorised code.  Such code is not authorised to be run by Apple and they have stated that this does void the warranty of the device.  However you can easily restore your device back to original (un jailbroken) status through Itunes.

The reason we are even talking about the Iphone and the meaning of jailbreaking is because devices which have had this operation done can run Nintendo emulators and mean users can play some classic Nintendo games among other things.  That equals good times.

Walking through the Jailbreaking process:

What will you need?

Jailbroken iPhone or iPod Touch
SNES4 iPhone SNES Emulator
TotalCommander software
T-PoT.0.2.zip
Squid
SNES Roms

To jailbrake your iPhone or iTouch you will need a PC or MAC along with the current upto date software used to do this.  Connect you device to your computer and run the software to achieve this.  The latest software for you device version can be found on wiki, here.  Once you have found the title of the software just Google it to find a download.  Below are the steps for TotalCommander.

Lets begin….

Install TotalCommander
Extract the T-PoT.0.2.zip archive
Open TotalCommander, click on Configuration at the top, then Options
Click on Plugins in the left column
Click Configure under File System Plugins.WFX
Click Add and find the T-PoT.0.2 folder and select the T-PoT.wfx file, click Ok
Close TotalCommander down and open it up again
In the Drop Down Menu on the right that says [-C-] change it to the last option [-/-]
This shows all of the files on your iPhone / iPod Touch we will use this software to transfer files to your device

Next step…… – Installing the iPhone SNES Emulator on your iPhone / iPod Touch

Open TotalCommander
In the right column locate the folder called applications
Drag the SNES4iPhone directory onto the applications folder
let it do its thing

Next step…… – Installing SNES Roms to play with your iPhone SNES Emulator

Use TotalCommander and navigate to the following path-

for Firmware lower then 1.1.3 in /var/root/Media/ROMs/SNES/
for Firmware higher or equal to 1.1.3 in /var/mobile/Media/ROMs/SNES/

Transfer your ROMS by dragging and dropping them into TotalCommaner

Next step…… Playing games

Open up the iPhone SNES emulator and select the settngs you want.  You can just run with default.  now just select the SNES game you want to play and let it roll.

The Fifa 10 game released last year has made 9.7 million sales as of the end of December 2009.  The game, created by Electronic Arts (EA Sports) has most likely passed the 10 million sales mark by now which is an amazing achievment for the company.  The level of sales during the December period was over double that of the sales count up until the end of november 2009.  That means that up until end November they sold 4.5 million copies and in Decemeber sold 5.2 million.  This must of been due to Christmas.

The Fifa 10 game is a developement which has continued to grow from previous Fifa games and they keep getting better.  The Eurogamer score was rated at 9/10 which is near perfect.

I’m definitly looking forward the the next release in the future.

Donkey Kong, the classic SNES game

Donkey Kong Country

People who can remember Donkey Kong on the SNES have probably grown up with the gaming revolution and this game probably holds many different memories for many different people.  The general aim was to jump the barrels being tossed at you by some huge ape.

Donkey Kong Country was the first incarnation of this timeless classic which was unleashed in the mid nineties.  It was arguably ahead of its time in the gaming world with both the visual aspect of the game and the controls.  The main consoles that reviled each other in those days were the Nintendo, (from the original NES to be followed by the Super Nintendo (SNES)),   Sega, who had the master system and then Mega Drive and also the PC gamers.  Donkey Kong helped Nintendo conquer this revelry.

From the early stages of dodging the barrel throwing ape, Donkey Kong evolved into a game that meant completing various stages to recover the haul of bananas that had been stolen.  The player had a number of lives which could be added to by collecting all the bananas from each level and being awarded one life per 100 bananas.  This is the same process later seen with the hugely popular Nintendo game series, Mario where coins are the bananas replacement.  Nintendo also bought in another dimension by allowing players to choose between 2 characters.  The original Donkey Kong or his younger brother, Diddy Kong.

The overall success of this game was wide and helped make Nintendo into the main console gaming giant you see today with various incarnations of this game appearing throughout the years.

Collecting original Nintendo games

I have just been reading about starting a Nintendo game collection, but just the original games.  It’s a bit of different view from the kind of things I normally talk about and thought it would be fun to share the details, in case any of you wanted to do this.

Many people have fond memories of the NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) from when they were children so it’s not surprising that avid game collectors exist.  I myself used to waste days at a time glued to the screen, thrashing my controller around.  Starting your collection off may be a little difficult as not many people sell the original games any more.  Probably the best way to get going is on eBay, log on and buy an original NES console as these are normally bundled with all the games the owner has because he will have no use for them now.  I’ve seen them go with up to 30 games and the price is minimal, like £50-£80 which isn’t bad to get you started.  Something to keep in mind about eBay is when you are searching, the people listing it may of spelt it incorrectly which means the game wont appear in the results.  Try searching for common mis-spellings.  This used to be a very good money spinning trick on eBay but as with most things they have caught on and have made it hard for the lister to make such mistakes.  They do still exist though so it is worth checking.

When you have got your base stock you simply need to build on it one at a time.  Car boot sales can be a gold mine on occasions, but many visits wont turn up any.  These type of places will have small price tags, 20p, 30p and probably 50p at most.  carry your stock list with you as you don’t want to waste money buying doubles, unless you plan on making a little business of selling them on, which may not be a bad idea.  We’ll touch a bit more on this later.

Bulk buying will help to bring the price down.  This generally applies to game store which are going out of business.  You may be able to pick them up at cost price.  An important point to make is to not feel pressured into buying.  I experienced a situation in a second hand shop once where the man saw I was keen to buy some old records and started pushing me to buy, telling me others had been in and where interested and they are worth xx amount.  You need to keep your cool, its your money and your decision.  Try and think sensibly and value the game on your own with out taking into account what the seller is telling.  As time goes on you will become very good at pricing accuratley.

Another tip is to carry a your own made list of rare games.  It will probably take some time to build up but it will become an invaluable tool to have.  Do your research and find out what is rare and th different price tags you should expect.  Google is a very good research tool.  A good place to start is by finding out how many copies of the game were produced.  Take 1990 Nintendo World Championships: Gold Edition for example.  How much do you think this is worth?  Would you be shocked if I said $15’000 – $21’000 dollars?  I’m not joking, there where only 26 copies made and where the prize in a Nintendo gaming competition.  Yes it’s extrememly rare you will find one, but you need to know just incase you do.  imagine finding one of these in your local second hand shop!

Going back to to what I said earlier about buying and selling your duplicate games.  It’s not hard nowadays to make websites and it can be cheaply done.  A good idea might be to list any duplicate games on your website.  Make a shopping cart section so people can buy direct from your site.  Over time you will most likely find that you can build up a very nice home based buisness and people will start contacting you to sell their own games.  This would be a good way to find rare games, having people contact you as you become more known and getting first refusel.

I hope this has given you some idea as to what can be achieved from collecting these great items.  Don’t forget you can check our store page for original Nintendo games.

Top Wii games of 2009

With the ever popular growing Wii, 2009 has seen some excellent games. It has spent the best part of 2009 competing with the Playstation 3 and Xbox who have both also had some great games out last year. Here we will take a brief look at the top sellers for the Nintendo Wii.

Wii Sports Resort

This could well be the number 1 game for Nintendo in, Wii Sports Resort features different exciting games like golf, basketball and tennis. The whole game is set on a beach and is the second game in the series. The first was Wii Sports. Other sports to play in this world of fun is wakeboarding, table tennis, bowling, cycling and more.

Super Smash Bros

A game that can be played online. Screen shots can be shared, so can replays. The simple controls mean children can also enjoy this game. The Nunchuck accessory is great for playing this game.

Mario Kart Wii

The Mario Kart for the Wii offers a huge range of course to whizz round. Easy to play and very popular. This game is a great group game and can provide endless hours of entertainment. In this Wii version of the game, Nintendo have added motor bikes and dirt nikes to the game. If I could recommend a game for all people then this would be it.

The Legend of Zelda

The Legend of Zelda offers a more than one game under this title. It is an extremely popular game on the Wii and is probably geared towards the more serious gamer. It has an outstanding puzzle design with excellent graphics. The sound however can feel a bit dated on occasions but then maybe they want to keep this because the original games date back to the mid 90’s.

All in all, Nintendo have had a real belter of a year in the gaming world. We can only assume that 2010 will be bigger and better for the gaming giant.
